Lesson 5: If I Win…
Mastering Real Possibilities (The First Conditional)
π― Lesson Objectives
- Understand the “Cause and Effect” logic of real-world scenarios.
- Correctly apply the Present Simple / Future (Will) grammar split.
- Use the First Conditional for professional promises and negotiations.
1. The Anatomy of a Possibility
The First Conditional is a “split” sentence. One half is the Condition (the “If” part), and the other half is the Result (the “Will” part).
The Formula:
If + [Present Simple] , [Will + Verb]
Example: “If I work hard, I will get a promotion.”
Note: You can flip the sentence! “I will get a promotion if I work hard.” (Notice: No comma is needed when ‘if’ is in the middle!)
2. Real-World Use Cases
We don’t just use this for grammar; we use it for specific communication goals:
| Goal | First Conditional Example |
|---|---|
| Negotiating | “If you lower the price, we will sign the contract.” |
| Warning | “If we don’t hurry, we will miss the deadline.” |
| Planning | “If it rains tomorrow, we will move the meeting inside.” |
3. Q&A: Thinking Ahead
In business and daily life, we use questions to explore consequences. Notice how the answer uses the “Will” result.
Q: What will you do if the meeting is canceled?
A: If the meeting is canceled, I will use that time to finish my reports.
Q: Will the company hire more staff if we get the new contract?
A: Yes, we will hire two more people if we win the contract.
4. Dialogue: The Project Deadline
Manager: “We really need to finish the prototype by Friday. Will we be ready if we start testing today?”
software engineer: “If we start now, we will finish the main features, but we might need more time for bugs.”
Manager: “If you need extra help, I will ask the design team to support you tomorrow.”
software engineer: “That sounds perfect. If they help us with the UI, we will definitely meet the Friday deadline.”
π£οΈ Shadowing: The Negotiator
Listen for the “jump” in tone between the condition and the result.
If the client accepts the proposal, we will start the project on Monday.

If I don’t hear from them by 5 PM, I will send a follow-up email.
π Advanced Logic Task
Task: Convert these two facts into one professional First Conditional sentence.
Facts: I finish the report. I send it to you immediately.
