Mini-Section: Master Daily Phrasal Verbs

Unlock the “Secret Code” to Natural Conversations

1. Why Phrasal Verbs Matter

Native speakers prioritize rhythm and efficiency. Instead of choosing a formal Latin-based verb (like “to search”), they use a Phrasal Verb (“to look for”). It is the difference between sounding like a textbook and sounding like a professional.

2. The Reality: Memorization is Key

Unfortunately, there is no grammatical rule to determine if a phrasal verb is separable or inseparable. It is a feature of the English language that must be learned through practice.

Common Separable Verbs:

  • Turn on / Turn off
  • Pick up / Put down
  • Set up
  • Call back

Common Inseparable Verbs:

  • Look for
  • Get over
  • Run into
  • Look after

3. The Mechanics: Separation Rules

Type 1: Separable Verbs

You can put the object between the verb and the particle, but you don’t have to.

Example (Noun): “Please turn the light on” OR “Please turn on the light.” (Both are correct!)

Crucial Note (The Sandwich Rule): If the object is a pronoun (it, me, them), it must go in the middle.

Correct: “Please turn it on.”
Incorrect: “Please turn on it.”

Type 2: Inseparable Verbs

The object always stays after the particle, regardless of whether it is a noun or a pronoun.

Example: “I am looking for the keys” OR “I am looking for them.”

Incorrect: “I am looking them for.”

4. Question & Answer: The “Sandwich” in Action

Q: Can you turn on the TV?

A: Sure, I’ll turn it on right now. (Sandwich mode)

Q: Did you pick up the documents?

A: Yes, I picked them up this morning. (Sandwich mode)

Q: Are you still looking for your keys?

A: Yes, I’m still looking for them. (Inseparable—no sandwich mode allowed!)

📝 Final Challenge

Complete the response using the pronoun “it” or “them” in the correct position:

1. Q: Should I set up the new meeting?
A: Yes, please __________________.

2. Q: Are you looking for the instructions?
A: Yes, I am __________________.
