Lesson 4: Master Your Life Milestones
Building your professional narrative with the Present Perfect
🎯 Lesson Objectives
- Master the distinction between “Finished Events” and “Ongoing States.”
- Expand professional vocabulary for academic and career growth.
- Learn to link life events into a coherent, impactful narrative.
1. Understanding the Milestone
To tell your story, distinguish between these two perspectives:
A. Finished Event
Highlights a specific achievement.
“I have earned my master’s degree.”
B. Ongoing State
Highlights a situation still continuing.
“I have been an engineer for five years.”
2. Professional Vocabulary in Action
🎓 Academic Milestones
Earn a degree:
“I have earned a degree in Economics; consequently, I developed a strong analytical foundation.”
Complete a certification:
“I have completed a project management certification, which has helped me optimize my daily workflow.”
đź’Ľ Career Milestones
Launch a project:
“I have launched three major marketing campaigns; as a result, I have gained deep insight into consumer behavior.”
Pivot your career:
“I have pivoted from sales to data analysis after realizing I wanted a more technical challenge.”
3. Dialogue: Career Reflections
Sarah: How is your new role? You seem very confident.
Mark: It’s going well! I have earned my MBA recently, and the knowledge I gained there has made my transition easier.
Sarah: That’s impressive. How long have you been in this industry?
Mark: I have been in tech for six years. I have already faced many challenges, so I feel ready for this leadership role.
4. The 3-Step “Impact” Narrative
A narrative must flow. We link the milestone (Event) to our experience (Context), which justifies our position today (Impact).
Narrative Example 1:
(Event) I have completed an intensive project management course. (Context) Building on that foundation, I have worked in the logistics industry for three years. (Impact) This combination of theory and experience allows me to lead complex teams effectively today.
Narrative Example 2:
(Event) I have launched a successful startup in the fintech space. (Context) Since then, I have been responsible for managing a team of twelve developers. (Impact) These years of leadership have taught me how to scale products under pressure.
🗣️ Shadowing: The Professional Narrative
Focus on the “Linking Verbs” and keeping the cadence smooth.
I’ve already established my career, having worked as a developer since 2018.
I haven’t yet reached my ultimate goal, but I’ve just taken a massive step forward.
📝 Advanced Milestone Integration
Task: Combine these fragments into a professional B1/B2 narrative. Include one “For/Since” marker and one “Just/Already/Yet” marker.
Fragment: “I finished my degree / I worked as a freelancer / I want to join your firm.”
