Lesson 12: What’s the Plan?
Fixed Arrangements with Present Continuous
Video Transcript
🎙️
Hey everyone! Let’s talk about the future. I know, deep stuff, right?
But I mean your plans for this week or next month. How do you talk about them in English?
You might think “will” or “going to” is the only way, but there’s another super common one: the Present Continuous.
Yes, the one with “ing”!
We use it for fixed arrangements. What’s a fixed arrangement?
It’s a plan you’ve already made, usually with a specific time or place. Think of it like an appointment in your calendar.
For example, “I’m meeting Sarah for coffee at 10 AM tomorrow.” See?
I’ve arranged it with Sarah, and we have a time and place.
It’s not just an idea; it’s a solid plan.
Or for travel: “We’re flying to Paris on Friday.” The tickets are booked! It’s happening.
So, next time you’re confirming plans, try it out!
“Are you coming to the party on Saturday?” It sounds so natural.
Hope that helps!
Don’t forget to follow the guidelines on this lesson.
🎯 Lesson Goals
- Understand how to use Present Continuous for future arrangements.
- Differentiate between a general intention and a fixed plan (with time and place).
- Learn common travel collocations for arrangements (meeting, flying, arriving).
- Practice confirming and checking future schedules.
💡 Grammar: Future Arrangements
We often use the Present Continuous (am/is/are + verb-ing) for plans that are already organized. This means you have a ticket, a reservation, or an agreement with another person.
| Structure | Example (Arrangement) |
|---|---|
| I am + -ing | “I am flying to New York tomorrow at 8 PM.” |
| We are + -ing | “We are meeting the tour guide at the museum.” |
| He/She is + -ing | “She is staying at the Hilton next week.” |
⚖️ Comparison: “Going to” vs. “Arrangements”
Going to (Intention)
A plan in your head. No booking yet.
“I’m going to visit Italy one day.”
Continuous (Arrangement)
Fixed. You have a ticket or a date.
“I’m flying to Rome on Friday.”
🎧 Shadowing: Checking the Schedule
Listen for the “fixed” details (times and places).
A: Hey, what time are you leaving for the airport tomorrow?
B: My taxi is arriving at 6:00 AM. I am taking the early flight.
A: Who is meeting you when you land?
B: My brother is picking me up. We are having lunch at a cafe near the terminal.
A: That sounds perfectly organized!
🧩 Active Practice
1. Arrangement or Intention?
Identify if these are Intentions (I) or Arrangements (A):
- “We’re meeting the manager at 10 AM.” (____)
- “I’m going to buy a new suitcase soon.” (____)
- “He’s playing tennis with Mark on Saturday.” (____)
2. Plan Your Weekend
Write 3 fixed arrangements for your upcoming weekend. Use a time and a person/place.
Example: “On Saturday at 7 PM, I am having dinner with my best friend.”

📊 Quick Tip: If you use the Present Continuous for the future without a time expression (like “tomorrow” or “at 5 PM”), people might think you are doing it right now. Always add a time word!
