Lesson 1: Where Were You?
Mastering the Past Tense of the Verb “To Be”
π΅οΈ The Alibi Challenge
A diamond is missing from the museum! The detective is questioning everyone. He has one simple question for you:
“Where were you yesterday at 8:00 PM?”
To solve this mystery, you need to leave the “Present” and travel to the “Past.”
1. Present vs. Past
In Level A1, you learned how to talk about Now. In Level A2, we talk about Then.
| Time | Verb “To Be” | Example |
|---|---|---|
| NOW (Present) | am / is / are | I am at home today. |
| THEN (Past) | was / were | I was at the museum yesterday. |
2. The Grammar Toolbox
In English, we choose the verb based on how many people or things we are talking about.
Singular (One)
I / He / She / It
Plural (More than one)
We / They
π¨ Watch Out! The “You” Exception
Whether you are talking to one person (singular) or a group (plural), we always use WERE.
You were my best student. (Singular)
You were all great at the party! (Plural)
Sentences in Context
Read these examples to see how we use “Was” and “Were” to describe situations in the past:
- πββοΈ I was hungry after the long meeting.
- π©βπΌ She was very busy at the office yesterday.
- π¬ The movie was fantastic, but the popcorn was expensive!
- π¨βπ©βπ§ We were in Italy for our holidays last year.
- π’ They were at work until 9:00 PM last night.
- π You were very helpful during the project!
3. Negatives and Questions
To be fully independent, you need to know how to say “No” and how to ask for information.
π« The Negative
To make a negative sentence, we simply add not after the verb. In real life, we almost always use the short form (contractions):
was + not = wasn’t
were + not = weren’t
Examples:
- I wasn’t at the party because I was sick.
- The food wasn’t very good at that restaurant.
- They weren’t in the meeting this morning.
- You weren’t late; you arrived on time!
β The Question
In English questions, we switch the order. The verb comes before the person.
She was… β Was she?
They were… β Were they?
Examples & Short Answers:
- Was she at the office?
(Yes, she was. / No, she wasn’t.) - Were the kids happy with their gifts?
(Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t.) - Were you tired last night?
(Yes, I was. / No, I wasn’t.)
4. Practice: The Party Photos
Look at these three photos from last night and complete the descriptions using was or were.

A. The weather ______ beautiful. We ______ at the beach.
Β

B. I ______ alone. It ______ very quiet.

Β
Β
C. They ______ very happy! They ______ at the game.
5. Practice: ShadowingΒ
Shadowing is an advanced technique where you listen to a native speaker and repeat exactly what they say at the same timeβlike a shadow!
How to Shadow:
- Listen: Play the audio once to hear the rhythm.
- Copy: Play it again and speak immediately after the voice.
- Perfect: Focus on the stressed words (in bold) and the intonation (the “music” of the sentence).
“I was at home all day.”
“They weren’t happy with the news.”
“Were you tired last night?”
Teacher’s Tip: Don’t worry about being perfect. Focus on the flow. If you miss a word, keep going!
