This mini‑section teaches you how to order food politely in three popular fast‑food restaurants. You will practice functional language, staff questions, and customer responses for each brand.

Learning Goals

  • Use polite expressions like “I’d like…” and “Can I have…” when ordering.
  • Respond to staff questions about size, toppings, or combos.
  • Practice ordering in three different contexts: McDonald’s, Subway, and Domino’s Pizza.
  • Handle payment and end the transaction politely with “Thank you.”

🍔 Ordering at McDonald’s

STAFF: Welcome to McDonald’s! May I take your order?

CUSTOMER: I’d like a Quarter Pounder meal, please. Can I have a medium Coke?

STAFF: Sure. Would you like fries with that?

CUSTOMER: Yes, please. That’s all.

STAFF: For here or to go?

CUSTOMER: To go, please.

STAFF: That’ll be $9.25.

CUSTOMER: Here you go. Thank you!

Note: McDonald’s sodas are ordered by size (small, medium, large). Free refills are being phased out in many locations, so check locally. Popular burgers include the Big Mac®, Quarter Pounder® with Cheese, Double Cheeseburger, and McChicken®.

🥪 Ordering at Subway

STAFF: Hi! What kind of sandwich would you like today?

CUSTOMER: Could I have a footlong turkey sandwich on Italian Herbs & Cheese bread?

STAFF: What toppings would you like?

CUSTOMER: Some lettuce, a few tomatoes, and a little mayo, please.

STAFF: Anything else?

CUSTOMER: No, that’s all. Thank you.

STAFF: That’ll be $10.25. How would you like to pay?

CUSTOMER: By card. Here you go. Thank you!

Note: Subway bread comes in 6‑inch and footlong sizes. Popular breads include Italian, 9‑Grain Wheat, Honey Oat, Flatbread, Italian Herbs & Cheese, Parmesan Oregano, and Jalapeño Cheese. Toppings include lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives, jalapeños, pickles, and sauces like chipotle southwest, honey mustard, and mayo.

🍕 Ordering at Domino’s Pizza

STAFF: Hello! Welcome to Domino’s. What can I get for you?

CUSTOMER: I’d like a large pepperoni pizza with thin crust, please.

STAFF: Would you like any extra toppings?

CUSTOMER: Yes, a few mushrooms and a little extra cheese.

STAFF: Great. Anything else?

CUSTOMER: No, that’s all. For delivery, please.

STAFF: Perfect. May I have your address and phone number?

CUSTOMER: Sure, here are my details. Thank you!

STAFF: That’ll be $15.99. Your pizza will arrive soon.

Note: Domino’s requires your address and phone number for delivery. Crust options include Hand Tossed, Handmade Pan, Crunchy Thin, New York Style, and Gluten‑Free. Popular toppings include pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, sausage, bacon, extra cheese, olives, green peppers, pineapple, and spinach.
