English A1 – Beginner

Welcome to your very first English lesson! Today, we are learning the English Alphabet (A-Z). Knowing the alphabet is the first and most important step to reading, writing, and spelling in English.

In this lesson, you will learn to:

  • Recognize and say the name of every letter (A to Z).
  • Identify the Capital and Small forms of each letter.
  • Ask and answer the question: “How do you spell that?”
  • Spell your own name and simple words in English.

1. The 26 Letters of the English Alphabet

The English alphabet has 26 letters. Each letter has two forms: a Capital Letter (Big Letter) and a Small Letter.

Capital Letter Small Letter Capital Letter Small Letter Capital Letter Small Letter
A a J j S s
B b K k T t
C c L l U u
D d M m V v
E e N n W w
F f O o X x
G g P p Y y
H h Q q Z z
I i R r

2. Vowels and Consonants

The 26 letters are divided into two groups:

  • Vowels (5 letters): A, E, I, O, U
  • Consonants (21 letters): All the other letters (B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z).

3. Saying the Letter Names

It is important to say the name of the letter correctly, not just the sound. Listen to the pronunciation of each letter and repeat it aloud several times.

4. Spelling in English

When you don’t understand a name or a word, you ask someone to spell it. To spell a word, you simply say the letters one by one.

Key Question:

The most useful question for spelling is:

“How do you spell that?”

“Can you spell that?”

“How do you spell your name?”

Example Dialogue:

  • Student A: My name is John.
  • Student B: How do you spell that?
  • Student A: J-O-H-N. (Jay – Oh – Aitch – En)

5. Activity: Shadowing Practice

Shadowing is a great way to improve your pronunciation and speed! You will listen to the audio and try to say the letters and words immediately after the speaker, mimicking the pronunciation and rhythm.

Shadowing Task:

  1. Alphabet Shadowing: Play the full alphabet audio again. Try to say the letters (A-Z) immediately after the speaker, without a pause.
  2. Self-Check: Record yourself spelling your own name and compare it to the pronunciation of the letters in the audio.
