🛠️ Unit 3: Functional Glossary

Don’t just learn the word—learn how to use it in real life.

The “Action” Vocabulary

English speakers focus on collocations (words that naturally go together). Use these pairs:

TO BOOK… (a flight / a room)

Context: Making plans.

“I’d like to book a double room for three nights, please.”

TO CHECK IN… (at the desk / online)

Context: Arriving.

“You can check in at the counter or use the machines over there.”

TO CATCH… (the bus / the train)

Context: Using transport.

“Hurry up! We need to catch the 10:15 train.”

TO GO THROUGH… (security)

Context: Procedures.

“It took 40 minutes to go through security today.”

Situational Survival Sets

At the Airport Terminal

Carry-on vs. Checked Bag:

Agent: “Is this your only checked bag?”
Traveler: “Yes, the other one is just a small carry-on for the cabin.”

At the Hotel Front Desk

Reservation vs. Amenities:

Traveler: “I have a reservation under the name ‘Garcia’.”
Staff: “Perfect. Your room is ready. Would you like to hear about our amenities, like the gym and pool?”

Navigating the City

Direct vs. Connection:

“Is there a direct bus to the museum, or do I need to make a connection at Central Station?”

Fare:

“Does the driver take cash for the fare, or do I need a travel card?”

🚀 Vocabulary in Action

1. When you are at a hotel reception:
“I have a reservation for two people. Is breakfast included in the amenities?”
2. When you are buying a ticket:
“I’d like a ticket for the direct flight. How much is the fare for a child?”
3. When you are at the gate:
“My carry-on is very small. Can I keep it under my seat after I board?”
