Audio Transcript

Hello everyone and welcome back to our English class!

Today, we’re going to learn how to talk about the past. We use the Past Simple for finished actions. For example, I visited my friend.

But when did I visit? To say when, we use time expressions.

Let’s look at some examples.

You can say: I visited my friend yesterday.

Yesterday means the day before today.

Or, I saw a movie last week.

We use ‘last’ with week, month, or year.

Last week.

Last month.

Last year.

We can also use ‘ago’.

For instance, I started this job two years ago. ‘Ago’ means before now.

So, to review: yesterday, last week, and two years ago are all time expressions we use with the Past Simple. Try making your own sentences in the comments!

Thanks for watching, and see you next time.

⏳ Mini-Section: Past Time Expressions

When exactly did it happen?

To give your story a specific date or time, we use these common expressions. Think of them in three main categories:

📅 Using “LAST”

Used for the most recent period of time.

  • Last night
  • Last week
  • Last month
  • Last year / Last summer

“I saw him last week.”

⬅️ Using “AGO”

Used to count back from the present.

  • Two days ago
  • Three months ago
  • A long time ago

“The bus left five minutes ago.”

📍 Specific Points

Fixed dates or general past markers.

  • Yesterday
  • The day before yesterday
  • In 2015 / In July
  • When I was a child

“I graduated in 2010.”

🎧 Activity 1: Listen and Repeat
