English A1 – Beginner

This short section provides the essential functional phrases you need to use and understand in the English classroom. After watching the introductory video, use this guide to review and practice all the key commands and student phrases. Mastering these phrases will help you participate confidently in every lesson.

1. Section Goals

  • Understand and follow all basic classroom commands, including actions and activity instructions.
  • Ask for help, clarify information, and make polite requests using common student phrases.

2. Teacher’s Commands (What you hear)

These are the instructions the teacher will use during the lesson to manage tasks and attention.

Command Function / Example
Open your book. To start a reading or exercise. Example: “Open your book to page 15.”

Close your notebook. To finish writing or an activity. Example: “Close your book now, please.”

Sit down / Stand up. Basic actions for movement in the class. Example: “Stand up, please.”

Listen (to the audio). To pay attention to a recording or the teacher. Example: “Listen to the dialogue.”

Repeat (after me). To practice pronunciation aloud as a group. Example: “Repeat after me, please.”

Look (at the board). To direct attention to the whiteboard or a screen. Example: “Look at the picture on the board.”

Work in pairs. To complete an activity with the person next to you. Example: “Work in pairs on Activity C.”

Raise your hand. The polite way to ask a question or give an answer. Example: “If you know the answer, raise your hand.”

I need a volunteer. The teacher is asking for a student to help with an activity. Example: “I need a volunteer to read the dialogue.”

Let’s review. To look back at a previous topic or check answers. Example: “Let’s review the answers for the homework.”

3. Student’s Phrases (What you say)

Use these polite phrases to communicate your needs to the teacher and fellow students.

To politely ask the teacher to say something again.
I don’t understand.

To tell the teacher when you are confused about a task or topic.
How do you spell that?

To ask for the letter-by-letter spelling of a difficult word.
What does that mean?

To ask for the definition of a new word.
Excuse me, can you help me?

To get the teacher’s attention when you need assistance.
Excuse me, may I go to the bathroom?

A formal, polite request for permission to leave the room.
